OSCE Preparation Training – Mental Health

Course Overview

The SCIRE OSCE Preparation Training – Mental Health is designed for internationally educated nurses preparing for the NMC Test of Competence (ToC) Part 2 OSCE (Mental Health route). This programme equips candidates with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to demonstrate safe, effective, and person-centred care in line with UK nursing standards.

Through a mix of theory, practice, and mock OSCEs, the course focuses on mental health–specific clinical scenarios, communication, safeguarding, professional values, and therapeutic engagement. Learners will practise in a supportive environment that mirrors NMC test centres, with experienced OSCE trainers providing feedback at every step.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Apply structured approaches to history-taking, risk assessment, therapeutic communication, care planning, and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrate competence in mental health clinical skills including observation, medication management, safeguarding, and de-escalation.
- Deliver safe, compassionate, evidence-based care in line with the NMC Code (2018) and NICE guidelines.
- Confidently approach OSCE stations (APIE, skills, and professional values).
- Reflect on feedback and improve performance through mock OSCE practice.

Course Content

- Introduction to the Mental Health OSCE format
- APIE stations (Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation)
- Mental health clinical scenarios (e.g. depression, schizophrenia, dementia, self-harm, crisis situations)
- Skills practice: observations, safe medication administration, documentation, safeguarding, therapeutic engagement
- Professional values: communication, consent, dignity, cultural awareness, ethics in mental health practice
- Multiple mock OSCEs under exam-like conditions with detailed feedback
